Gemstone paintings are made of miniature polished gemstones measuring <1mm to 5-6mm. The gemstones (also known as semiprecious stones) are attached to a board or canvas with glue. Each gemstone is individually chosen for its size, colour and shape. The final effect is an impressionistic or a pointillist “painting”: Creating a painting using gemstones as a medium is a long process. It is like assembling a jigsaw puzzle with the difference that the “pieces” are minuscule and not ready cut to fit into a suitable space. Each painting has a different quantity of gemstones: ranging from 500 to 5000 or more. The themes of the paintings vary from still life, to nature and landscapes. I particularly like painting landscapes.
Gemstone
paintings are extremely colourful and sparkling, and in good light they
become alive. Sometimes I use watercolours
and acrylic paint
for
special effects. |

Special features of the gemstone paintings • Gemstone Paintings cannot be copied by other artists. The reason: There are not two identical crystals or rocks created by nature. It applies to colour and shape of the gemstones. • Gemstone Paintings will never fade away. The reason: Unlike the oil, acrylic or water colour paints the colours of crystals and rocks are permanent. The formation of these gemstones took millions or milliards of years and the colours developed during the process cannot be changed. • Gemstone Paintings give an impression of 3-dimensional space. The reason: The crystals and rocks are 3-dimensional by nature. Even the oil paint will not lift the surface of a painting as much as one can do using the gemstones. • Gemstone Paintings must not be immersed in
water or any other fluids. |
